FOREWORD

Pediatric Pulmonology is currently a demanding field because of the increasing trend of respiratory diseases. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy is one of the most useful tool added in the armamentarium of diagnostic workup in pulmonary medicine. Dr. D. Vijayasekaran has been working in this field for more than two decades and has had an opportunity to do fiberoptic bronchoscopy in more than 2500 children for varied indications. Imparting knowledge to others is the fundamental law of medicine. Accordingly, he has ventured to bring out his observations in the form of a book which is highly appreciated.

I had the pleasure of reviewing this book, which is well written and easily understandable even for a beginner in this field. Bronchoscopic pictures and the clinical scenarios will be of immense use to the readers. It is appreciable that he has brought his observations in coloured pictures. The case scenarios may create interest among pediatricians in pediatric pulmonology.

I feel this book will be of much use for all the pediatricians who are interested in the field of pulmonology. His excellent efforts in bringing out this book deserves appreciation and encouragement.

PREFACE

The encouragement of my friends made this book a reality. Pediatric bronchoscopy is a demanding field many youngsters want to undertake. Unfortunately, hardly few tertiary institutions are equipped with fiberoptic bronchoscopy. The lack of training programme in this field is the added disadvantage.

I had the unique opportunity of being closely associated with Prof. N. Somu, the father of pediatric pulmonology, and Prof. L. Subramanyam, for nearly twenty years and they were the two who practiced pediatric bronchoscopy in early nineties.

I have had the opportunity to perform many bronchoscopies, which enabled me to understand the nuances of this technique and that inspired me to impart the knowledge to others. Understanding the art of bronchoscopy, the anatomy of the airway, and the underlying disease are the three important prerequisites which should be methodically learnt before venturing with the bronchoscope. I have sincerely attempted to deliver the relevant information in a lucid style so that even a beginner can develop interest in bronchoscopy after going through the book. However for a person who wants to practice bronchoscopy, practical training is needed under an expert till he masters the art. I have added few case scenarios which may enhance the practical knowledge to bronchoscopy.

I sincerely thank Prof. Mangayarkarasi Senguttuvan, the Director and Superintendent, Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children and Prof. S. Sridharan, the Medical Director, Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, for their encouragements.

My kind gratitude to Dr. N.C. Gowrishankar, Dr. K. Nedunchelian, Dr. A. Balachandran, Dr. S. Ramesh, Dr. S. Thangavelu, Dr. So. Shivbalan who have taken pains to formulate the script. I am previliged to have many postgraduates who have helped me in the draft correction and they deserve special appreciation. My association with Mr. D. Ramanathan, Alamu Printing Works needs special mention for his sincere cooperation.
